How Much Does Solar Battery Storage Cost in Australia?

Battery prices have dropped significantly. Here's what Australian homeowners are actually paying for a home battery in 2026 — before and after rebates.

Battery storage costs have come down significantly over the last few years, and 2026 has a federal rebate making them more affordable than ever. Here's a clear-eyed look at what you'll actually pay.

The Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program

From 2025, the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides a rebate of approximately $372 per usable kWh of battery capacity (the exact rate adjusts slightly each year). For a typical 10–13 kWh battery, that's $3,700–$4,800 off the installed price.

This rebate applies to new battery installations paired with solar and is available in most states. It significantly changes the economics — prices below are post-rebate unless stated.

What You'll Pay by Battery Size

Battery sizing is measured in usable kWh. A typical Australian household needs 10–15 kWh to cover overnight consumption after a full day of solar generation.

  • 5–7 kWh: $3,000–$5,000 installed (after rebate). Suitable for smaller homes or households with low overnight usage.
  • 10 kWh: $5,500–$7,500 installed (after rebate). Covers most of the overnight needs for an average household.
  • 13–16 kWh: $6,500–$10,000 installed (after rebate). Full overnight coverage for most households, plus some buffer.

Major Battery Brands and Installed Costs (2026)

Tesla Powerwall 3

13.5 kWh usable. Before federal rebate: $15,000–$18,000 installed depending on complexity. After rebate (~$4,450 off): approximately $10,500–$13,500. The Powerwall 3 integrates its own inverter, which simplifies the install and reduces cost if you're installing solar and battery together from scratch. Strong brand, app, and VPP (Virtual Power Plant) support.

BYD Battery-Box Premium

Available in 5.1–15.4 kWh configurations. Before rebate: $7,000–$12,000 installed for a 10kWh system. After rebate: roughly $5,500–$8,000. BYD is a Tier 1 manufacturer with a strong track record and competitive pricing. Works with many inverter brands.

Sungrow SBR / SBH Series

Modular and expandable, 9.6–25.6 kWh. Competitive pricing — among the most cost-effective quality options in Australia in 2026. Post-rebate costs for a 9.6 kWh configuration: roughly $5,000–$7,000 installed.

Sonnen

Premium German brand. High build quality, long warranty. More expensive — 10 kWh post-rebate can still reach $8,000–$11,000 installed. Worth considering for households that want the most robust warranty and longevity.

Is a Battery Worth It?

The payback period for a battery in 2026 is typically 7–10 years, depending on your self-consumption, electricity tariff, and whether you participate in a VPP program. Batteries don't save money the same way solar does — they're more about energy independence, blackout protection, and reducing peak-period grid usage if you're on time-of-use tariffs.

If your main motivation is saving money, solar-only is still the better return on investment for most households. If you want backup, don't like your network, or have high time-of-use peak rates, a battery starts to make more sense.

The numbers will be different for every household. Upload your electricity bill to GridBeater and we'll model your solar-only vs solar-plus-battery savings side by side.
